Where sunlight hits furniture and your valuable items put a UV filter film on your windows. Sun light will be reduced, thus saving those items any future damage.
I don’t know about you, but after an earthquake, hurricane and a tropical storm I need sun! But more than that I need to make sure my clients are protected. Never having been in an earthquake, I did not know what to expect after the earthquake on August 23, 2011 that hit the east coast. After the quake I reentered my office in Annapolis, Maryland, to find one bookshelf and contents on the floor the other not touched, the pictures on the wall some went one way then the other.
What this clearly showed me as a professional personal property appraiser that I need to keep my current client and future clients well informed as to value, and how to protect their valuables. First and foremost get that insurance policy out of the file cabinet, and review with your insurance agent the contents of said policy.
Have you recently purchased or inherited some item of value that has no need to be on the homeowners or fine arts rider policy? If it is not on the policy it is time to do that. If you no longer own a valuable item, delete it from your insurance policy. It will save you money. These are important considerations that need to be discussed with your agent.
During Hurricane Irene this past summer, several of my clients had major damage due to water and wind. However they had no insurance or even photos to prove they had such an item.
What a shock to the homeowner, they could not prove what they had. Not only did they not receive a replacement value of the items, but lost the precious item as well.
The heart break was great on all levels.
So as a professional appraiser I recommend that you contact your insurance agent and then contact an appraiser to provide you with a professional appraisal inventory. It is well worth that cost, and your wonderful items can be passed on to future generations.
